History

The St. James the Apostle Anglican church was built in 1912 by the Price Bros. Company on the corner of King George Street and Price Street in Kenogami. Religious services in the Anglican tradition were held in the church until 1966 when it was sold to the Frères Evangélistes. The Church continued to be used for religious services until 1986 when it was deemed too small for continued use and a new facility was to be built. The building of a new church on the same site spelled disaster for the original Anglican Church. It had been a witness to many decades of the history of Kenogami and Jonquiere.

Some citizens of Jonquiere and Kenogami, feeling a need to protect their heritage and traditions decided to set up a committee to protect the church. Thus was established in 1987, La Corporation Sauvegarde du Patrimoine de Saguenay.

Soon after, the church was moved from its original location on the corner of King George Street and Price Street to Ball Park, a short distance away. It was here that, with the support of the Price family, extensive work was begun to restore the building to its’ original specifications. The Sir William Price Heritage center was inaugurated on the 28th of August 1988.
